TMS Therapy
Transcranial magnetic stimulation is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment for depression. No anesthesia, and you can drive yourself home.
What it is
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment for depression. A magnetic coil placed gently against your head delivers pulses to areas of the brain involved in mood.
TMS doesn't require anesthesia or medication. You stay awake and alert during each session and can go back to your day afterward.
Who it may help
- Adults with depression who haven't found enough relief from medication
- People who prefer a treatment without medication side effects
- Anyone who can commit to regular sessions over several weeks
Your clinician will talk with you about whether this treatment is a good fit.
Your visit
What a visit looks like
- Step 1
Mapping session
At your first session, your clinician finds the right position and strength for your treatment.
- Step 2
Settle in
You sit in a reclining chair. You'll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp.
- Step 3
Short sessions
Sessions usually take under 40 minutes, typically five days a week for several weeks.
- Step 4
Back to your day
There's no recovery time — you can drive yourself home or go back to work.
